What is The Dazed Starling: Unbound?
California Baptist University's Literary Journal
The Dazed Starling is a student run literary journal of the Creative Writing program at California Baptist University. CBU’ s Dazed Starling student literary journal is an annual print edition of student work.
The Dazed Starling: Unbound extends the print journal’ s mission by offering a digital publication opportunity open not only to current CBU students but also to faculty, alumni, and friends of the university. The Dazed Starling: Unbound also seeks to extend the creative voice of The Dazed Starling student literary journal with additional emphasis on visual arts.
Our Story
The first five issues of The Dazed Starling: Unbound have successfully set the foundation for a digital literary journal. This year our editorial team wanted to take this digital medium a step further. In addition to the e-book version published on Issue, we decided to try our hand at creating an interactive digital experience. With two weeks before the publication date, the eight of us spilt off from the larger editorial group and began the creation of this interactive experience. We began by grouping the accepted poetry and prose with the visual art pieces based on theme and location. After this process we arrived at the overall theme of traveling from Space, to Nature, and ending in an Urban environment. One long journey through multiple night based aesthetics. Joshua, Amberly, and Ryan focused on the develop of the experience itself. Kaylee led the graphic design element of the website. David composed a mix of classical and original music to accompany the experience and mixed the narration audio files. Alyssa, Joseph, and Jonathan edited the poetry and prose pieces, compiled the visual and literary database, and wrote content for all of the accessory pages.
